Trey Reed Found Hanging at Delta State: Family Demands Truth, Ben Crump and Colin Kaepernick Step In

Shock and heartbreak have gripped Mississippi after the body of 21-year-old Black student Demartravion “Trey” Reed was found hanging from a tree on the Delta State University campus. Officials quickly ruled the death a suicide, but the family isn’t buying it—and now their fight for answers is gaining national attention.

Authorities said there were no signs of foul play, but Reed’s relatives insist the story doesn’t add up. They say they were first told Trey was found in his dorm room, not outside hanging from a tree. That contradiction, paired with Mississippi’s painful history of racial violence, has ignited outrage in the community.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump has taken on the case, calling for full transparency and demanding access to all campus surveillance footage. And in a stunning show of support, former NFL star Colin Kaepernick has pledged to fund an independent autopsy through his Know Your Rights Camp.

“This family deserves the truth,” attorney Vanessa J. Jones said. “We will not rest until we know what happened to Trey Reed.”

Campus police insist their investigation found no signs of struggle, but Reed’s family and supporters say too many questions remain unanswered. With the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office now reviewing the case, pressure is mounting on Delta State and state officials to come clean.

For Black communities across the South, this tragedy cuts deep. A young man found hanging from a tree in 2025 is more than a tragedy—it’s a chilling reminder of a history many fear is not as far behind us as we’d like to believe.

The question now: Will the independent autopsy reveal the truth Mississippi officials don’t want us to see?
