A decade after the Texas Education Agency dissolved North Forest ISD—once a majority-Black school district in northeast Houston—its former students and teachers are working to keep its legacy alive. The district, which had a rich history of Black educators and student achievements, was absorbed into Houston ISD in 2013 following years of state intervention. Today, alumni gather for reunions, host historical exhibits, and push for equitable funding in HISD schools serving Black neighborhoods. Many feel the closure stripped the community of a vital cultural institution, and efforts continue to preserve the district’s memory for future generations.
