Texas is planning to add 5,600 new prison beds as state officials anticipate an increase in the overall inmate population. More than $300 million is expected to be invested in the construction of 14 new expansion dormitories at correctional facilities across the state. The projects will be located in communities including Lubbock, Bryan, Edinburg, Venus, Bonham, Richmond, Austin, Cleveland, El Paso, Dayton and Navasota. Many of the new dormitories are expected to include air conditioning and other improvements.
The planned expansion comes as Texas continues to operate one of the nation’s largest prison systems. Officials say adding capacity now will help the state prepare for projected increases in the inmate population and maintain adequate housing and staffing at correctional facilities.
