Senate Passes Bipartisan Funding Bill to Avert Pre-Election Shutdown

The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved a temporary government funding bill Saturday, taking an early step toward avoiding another federal shutdown before the November midterm elections. The measure passed 90-6 and would generally keep federal agencies funded at current levels through December 11.

The House passed a different short-term funding plan in July, so lawmakers must reconcile the two versions after returning from their August recess. A final bill must reach President Donald Trump before current federal funding expires September 30.

The Senate version includes adjustments for housing and food-assistance programs. It would also prevent money from being transferred to Border Patrol during the temporary funding period and pause a proposed rule that would give political appointees greater control over federal grant awards.

The early vote reflects lawmakers’ effort to avoid the disruption caused by two recent shutdowns. The measure is not yet law, however, and a final agreement between the House and Senate remains necessary.
