On January 31, 2025, Texas Southern University Board of Regents Chairman Brandon L. Simmons was sworn in as a member of the Texas Lyceum Board of Directors. Established in 1980, The Texas Lyceum is widely considered the Lone Star State’s premier non-profit, non-partisan, statewide leadership organization.
The Lyceum is guided by a 96-member Board of Directors from across Texas who serve two consecutive three-year terms. Notable Lyceum alumni include President George W. Bush, U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and Kay Bailey Hutchison, Governors Greg Abbott and Rick Perry, Members of Congress Chris Bell, Pete Gallegos, Marc Veasey, and Sheila Jackson Lee, Chancellor John Sharp, and countless others who have gone on to major elected and appointed public service accomplishments and to lead substantial corporate, non-profit, educational, and civic organizations.
TSU has longstanding ties to the Lyceum. The Honorable David Gamble, a former member of TSU’s Board of Regents, served on the Lyceum Board of Directors and was its Chairman from 1986-1987. In addition to Chairman Simmons, former TSU Board of Regents Chairman Hasan Mack was also named to the Lyceum Board of Directors Class of 2025. TSU students have also maintained roles in the prestigious Lyceum Fellows Program, including Ebony Sowells, Jaila Moore, and Jasmine Johnson, who served as fellows in 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively. Lyceum Fellows Faculty Advisor Professor Carroll G. Robinson was a Lyceum Director for the Class of 1994.
“With a current TSU Chairman and a former TSU Chairman serving together on the 2025 Board of Directors, Texas Southern University is already ringing out in this august body,” said Chairman of the Board of Regents Brandon L. Simmons. “I have no doubt that we will bring the voices of our students with us into conversations about the future of this great state. This is an extraordinary time to be a Texan, and I am grateful for the opportunity to play a role in our state’s future.”
