Congratulations to Dietrich Butler! The third grade student from Harris Elementary School is the winner of State Representative Jarvis Johnson’s ornament decorating contest.
Dietrich’s ornament will represent District 139. It will be one of the ornaments that will hang on the State of Texas Holiday Tree in Austin.
Every year during the holiday season, each State Legislator from all 150 House Districts chooses an organization, school or individual to design an ornament for the official tree. The ornaments, representing the culture and personality of each district, are hung throughout the holiday season on the tree.
State Representative Johnson dropped by the campus to congratulate Dietrich. Also present was his grandfather George Williams. Dietrich acknowledged Iyah Pennie who is an instructional paraprofessional at the school. Pennie helped Dietrich with the design for his ornament.
The district ornament project was initiated in 2009 to give all the unique Texas communities a place on the Lone Star Celebration Holiday Tree in the Chamber of the Texas House of Representatives.
The ornaments placed on the tree will hang through January 2, 2019. Visitors to the House chamber can find their home districts on a map in front of the tree. Once they find their districts, visitors can look through a large binder that provides photos of, and information about, each ornament.
The House chamber is open to the public.
