The National Park Service (NPS) has restored its Harriet Tubman and Underground Railroad webpage to its original state following public outcry and media scrutiny. Unauthorized edits had removed Tubman’s image and altered descriptions, softening references to slavery and reframing the Underground Railroad as a broad civil rights movement rather than a resistance against enslavement. The changes occurred without leadership approval, and no responsible party has been identified. This incident is part of broader actions within the federal government under President Donald Trump to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Trump has also tasked Vice President JD Vance with revising exhibits in the Smithsonian museums to remove “improper ideology.”
