MILTON C. ALFORD PASSES AT 97

Milton C. Alford was a groundbreaking African American firefighter in Houston, Texas, who played a vital role in advancing both public service and civil rights in the city. In 1955, after the annexation of the predominantly Black neighborhood of Clinton Park, Alford and nine other Black volunteer firefighters were recruited into the Houston Fire Department. After completing their training at the fire academy, Alford and eight of his peers graduated and joined the force. He went on to serve nearly 27 years, even- tually retiring as an inspector. Alford is remembered as a pioneer who helped break racial barriers and opened doors for future generations of Black fire- fighters in Houston.
