Environmental Contamination in Fifth Ward

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) discovered elevated levels of dioxins, toxic chemicals known to cause cancer, in the soil outside the Julia C. Hester House community center in Houston’s Fifth Ward. The contamination is linked to historical industrial activities, particularly from the former Houston Wood Preserving Works. Community leaders have expressed deep concern over the health implications and are demanding swift remediation efforts.
