Black Candidates Face High-Stakes Wisconsin Governor Primary

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin voters will decide Tuesday which Democrat advances in a closely watched race for governor, with two Black political leaders among the candidates competing for the nomination.

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes are running alongside state Rep. Francesca Hong, state Sen. Kelda Roys and former state administration official Joel Brennan. Crowley, the first Black person elected Milwaukee County executive, reentered the contest in July with backing from outgoing Gov. Tony Evers. Barnes previously served as Wisconsin’s first Black lieutenant governor.

The Associated Press describes the primary as part of a wider clash between progressive activists and the Democratic establishment ahead of the November midterm elections. The nominee is expected to face Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, who has President Donald Trump’s endorsement.

Wisconsin’s official MyVote website says polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 11. Eligible voters may register at their polling place with proof of residence, and absentee ballots must be received by 8 p.m.
