April 9, 1939 – Marian Anderson’s Lincoln Memorial Concert

After being denied the opportunity to perform at Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution due to her race, renowned African American contralto Marian Anderson gave a historic open-air concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, drawing a crowd of 75,000 and millions of radio listeners.
