At least six people, including a 4-year-old boy, have died after powerful storms and flooding swept across Indiana, state emergency officials reported Saturday.
The deaths occurred in Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties after the storm system began Tuesday, according to Reuters. The victims included three females and two males in addition to the child.
Floodwaters forced large-scale evacuations and boat rescues across central Indiana. The Associated Press reported that more than 11 inches of rain fell in some areas over two days, pushing sections of the White River to record levels. More than a dozen counties declared local disasters, and emergency crews rescued residents and pets from flooded neighborhoods.
President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration making federal assistance available. Officials continued warning residents not to drive through floodwater as recovery operations moved forward.
