Houston is mourning Georgia D. Provost, the pioneering photographer, educator and community advocate affectionately known as the unofficial mayor of Third Ward. Provost died Aug. 9 at age 85, according to the Houston Defender Network.

For decades, Provost helped document Black Houston through Provost Studios, the family photography business founded by her late husband, Herbert Provost, in 1948. The studio photographed generations of families, students, clergy members, elected officials and community leaders, including students at Black schools and historically Black colleges before integration.

Provost was also a Texas Southern University graduate who taught photography at the university and remained a dedicated supporter of students and alumni. TSU remembered her as a lifelong member of the Tiger family and a fierce advocate for the university and its community. In May, she became the first recipient of TSU’s Presidential Service Award.

Local leaders said her influence extended far beyond the camera. She mentored young people, supported education and civic involvement, and regularly used her voice to advocate for Third Ward residents. ABC13 reported that Houston City Council Member Willie Davis described “Mother P” as an important figure in the city.

Provost leaves behind an enduring visual record of Black Houston and a legacy of service that shaped Third Ward for generations.
