The National Negro Leagues Family Alliance (NLFA) mourns the passing of Ron “Schoolboy” Teasley, a cherished member of our community, a proud representative of Negro Leagues history, and a lifelong ambassador for the game he loved. Mr. Teasley transitioned on February 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that stretches far beyond the baseball diamond. Born January 26, 1927, Teasley was a native of Detroit and a standout athlete from an early age. He earned the nickname “Schoolboy” for his remarkable talent and discipline as a young player. At Detroit Northwestern High School, Teasley starred in both basketball and baseball (later entering the Hall of Fame as both a player and coach).
He has been inducted to six halls of fame and served in the U.S. Navy. A true trailblazer, he was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in the era following Jackie Robinson’s integration of Major League Baseball, placing him among the early athletes helping to break racial barriers in the sport. Teasley spent time with the Olean Oilers and also played professionally with the New York Cubans in the Negro Leagues and the Carman Cardinals (of the Mandak League), further cementing his place in baseball history. Teasley’s .500 BA record still stands at Wayne State University (where he is a Hall of Famer and also played basketball). When Teasley returned to Detroit Northwestern to teach and coach, he won 15 championships and inspired student-athletes to maximize their potential.
But it was his spirit, generosity, and commitment to preserving history that made him a pillar within the NLFA. Mr. Teasley was a constant presence at events and educational programs, always eager to share stories, uplift younger generations, and ensure that the legacy of Negro Leagues players remained alive and accessible.
His voice carried the wisdom of lived experience. His presence carried the warmth of a man who understood the power of community. His legacy carries forward through every family, student, and fan who learned from him.
As we honor his life, we extend our deepest condolences to the Teasley family and to all who loved him. The NLFA will continue to celebrate his contributions, preserve his story, and uplift the history he helped shape.
May Ron “Schoolboy” Teasley rest in power. His legacy remains a guiding light for all of us committed to remembering, educating, and celebrating the heroes of the Negro Leagues.
