Statement from the Texas House Democratic Caucus on the Supreme Court’s Birthright Citizenship Decision

Statement from the Texas House Democratic Caucus on the Supreme Court's Birthright Citizenship Decision

Texas House Democratic Leader Gene Wu released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment:

“Today’s decision is a victory for the Constitution, the rule of law, and Texas families. The Supreme Court reaffirmed what the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees: if you are born in the United States, you are a citizen of the United States. That has been settled law for more than 150 years, and it should never have been in doubt.

“No president has the authority to rewrite the Constitution with the stroke of a pen. Our rights do not change because a politician wants them to. In America, the Constitution is the highest law of the land, and every public official – in Washington and right here in Texas – takes an oath to uphold it, not ignore it.

“As Texans and all Americans prepare to celebrate 250 years of independence, today’s decision is a reminder that America’s strength has always rested on our commitment to the Constitution and the rights it guarantees us. Our founding document is not optional. It is not subject to political convenience. And it does not bend to executive overreach.”
