ROUND ROCK, TX — Today, Texas State Representative James Talarico announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, launching a campaign to take power back for working people in a system rigged by billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians. This evening, Talarico will hold a kick-off rally in his hometown of Round Rock, Texas.
“The biggest divide in our country is not left vs right — it’s top vs bottom. Billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians have taken over our state and our country, rigging the system for themselves,” said James Talarico. “I’m running for the U.S. Senate to bring people together and take power back for working Texans. This is an underdog fight. We’re going up against the political establishment, and we’re going up against a lot of money. Big Money is powerful, but it’s nothing compared to people power.”
James is an eighth-generation Texan, former middle school teacher, and Presbyterian seminarian. Before he ran for office, he taught on the westside of San Antonio, in one of Texas’ poorest zip codes — fueling his commitment to public education in the state.
That commitment inspired him to run for the Texas House in 2018, flipping a district Donald Trump had won just two years earlier. He has passed major legislation to fund public schools, expand job opportunities for young adults, and lower the cost of child care, housing, and prescription drugs.
At the Texas Capitol, James has led the fight against the billionaire mega-donors that have taken over our state and our country. He has earned millions of views on his videos about politicians giving billionaires special treatment, billionaires buying politicians, and billionaires trying to privatize public schools.
James’ granddad was a Baptist preacher in South Texas, inspiring him to pursue seminary to one day become a pastor himself. His sermons on issues like Christian Nationalism have generated millions of views on Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram.
He recently was one of the only Democrats invited on America’s #1 podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, where his performance was hailed as a “tour de force” that received tens of millions of views online and coverage in dozens of media outlets.
At 36 years old, James will bring new energy as the youngest member of the U.S. Senate. At a time when the Democratic Party is searching for a path forward, James offers a new model to break through and win: the Texas way.
