Lone Star Flight Museum Recognizes Black History Month with Programming Highlighting African American Aviation Pioneers- Tuskegee Airmen, Astronaut Mae Jemison, Others

WHO: The Lone Star Flight Museum is continuing to honor Black pioneers of air and space and celebrate their accomplishments with a series of Black History Month special programs and events.

WHEN: Throughout February 2026, which is designated as Black History Month

WHERE: Lone Star Flight Museum, 11551 Aerospace Ave., Ellington Airport, Houston, Texas 77034

WHAT: Sat., Feb. 14 – Tuskegee Airmen Programming, featuring Texas Aviation Hall of Fame Interpretative Talk and STEMonstration activity

11 a.m. Tuskegee Airmen TAHOF Interpretive Talk

2:30 pm:  Tuskegee Airmen STEMonstration

In 1941, the U.S. Army Air Corps began training Black pilots at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama, where 32 Texans earned their wings. They flew 15,000 sorties and destroyed 260 enemy aircraft while supporting American heavy bombers on escort missions. Hear details of the Tuskegee Airmen’s incredible achievements at these events.

The Tuskegee Airmen were inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame in 2009.

Sat., Feb. 21 – 2:30 p.m. –  Astronaut and Physician Mae Jemison, STEMonstration

This STEMonstration will focus on space exploration, highlighting Mae Jemison’s groundbreaking achievements and lasting contributions. Dr. Jemison is an engineer, physician, and NASA astronaut who was the first African American woman to travel to space as a science mission specialist aboard the shuttle Endeavor (STS-47).

 

Sat., Feb. 28 – 2 p.m.  – Fight to the Finish Book Club Discussion

This discussion focuses on the book American Wings by Sherri L. Smith and Elizabeth Wein, which chronicles Chicago’s pioneering Black aviators who laid the groundwork for World War II pilots. Books are available for purchase in the museum gift shop.

These programs are included with every general admission ticket and free for members.
