HISD Begins Comprehensive Transition Plan After Board Approves School Closures

HISD statement - Payroll Correction

The Houston Independent School District’s Board of Managers approved the Administration’s recommended plan to close 11 District facilities at the end for the 2025-2026 academic year. The Board of Managers voted 9-0 in favor of the proposal.

The plan includes the closure of eight schools and the consolidation/co-location of four additional campuses. District leadership emphasized that this action, while difficult, is intended to improve the financial sustainability of HISD long-term and ensure District resources are directed where they can have the greatest impact on student achievement. The aim of the HISD Administration is to provide every student with access to a high-quality learning environment with robust academic and extracurricular programming.

HISD will implement a comprehensive transition plan to support affected students, families, and staff. This includes direct phone outreach to every affected family to discuss student placement options, staff reassignment processes, transportation planning, and continued engagement with impacted communities to ensure a smooth transition ahead of the 2026-2027 school year. The Administration is committed to assisting family transitions and will continue providing updates as implementation moves forward.

“Decisions like these are never easy, but they are necessary to ensure the District is using its resources in ways that best support the needs of students,” said Superintendent Mike Miles. “HISD is serving fewer students than in past years, and maintaining underutilized buildings diverts resources away from classrooms and student opportunities. While difficult, this is a responsible step toward building a stronger and more sustainable Houston ISD.”

Families can get more details anytime by visiting houstonisd.org/closure-resources or by reaching out to the Family Connections Center.

The District has also put together an updated 2026–2027 School Zone Attendance Map, which lets families look up any boundary changes for their home address. Families can find it through the HISD School Locator 2026–2027 Map, which is also available on the closure resources page.
