Roughly 350,000 Haitians living in the United States officially lost Temporary Protected Status on Wednesday after a federal judge lifted the remaining court stay, according to The Associated Press.

The change ends federal deportation protection and work authorization tied to the program, leaving many long-term residents vulnerable to removal. The action followed a June 25 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said challengers were not entitled to postpone the termination while litigation continued.

Haitian community leaders warn that families, churches and employers are already feeling the effects as residents avoid public spaces and weigh whether to remain without legal status or return to Haiti amid widespread gang violence, displacement and poverty.
