The Kennedy Center’s board voted Thursday to restore President Donald Trump’s name to the performing arts landmark and close most of the complex for two years, renewing a legal and political fight over the institution’s future.
Under the plan, the building’s facade would read, “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump,” while its main plaza would also be renamed for Trump. The board said a lengthy closure is needed for substantial renovations.
The vote challenges a May ruling by U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who determined that federal law gives Congress—not the board—the authority to change the center’s name. Cooper ordered Trump’s name removed and blocked the proposed two-year shutdown. The name was taken down in June after courts rejected efforts to delay the order.
Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio, an ex-officio board member who sued over the earlier renaming, criticized Thursday’s process and indicated that the fight would continue. The board is now dominated by Trump allies.
The Associated Press reported that the center must submit its renovation plan for judicial review. Reuters said the renewed naming vote could trigger another court clash because Congress originally designated the institution as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy.
