Abbott Threatens Houston Airport Funding Over Muslim Prayer Facility

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered a review of state grants connected to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport over facilities used by Muslim travelers for ritual washing before prayer.

Abbott argued that the accommodations favor one religion and asked federal transportation officials to investigate. His review could lead to current grants being revoked or future funding being denied, according to The Texas Tribune and a letter from the governor’s office.

The Houston airport has operated an ablution area and adjoining prayer space since 2024. Ablution facilities provide a designated place for Muslims to wash their hands and feet before prayer. Supporters describe them as a practical safety and cleanliness accommodation at international airports, while Abbott says government-owned facilities must not favor a specific faith.

DFW canceled a proposed expansion of similar facilities, saying the project would not provide the expected operational benefits. Houston Airport System had not issued a public response in the initial reports.
