It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of former U.S. Secretary of Education Dr. Rod Paige, who died this morning at his home, with his devoted wife, Stephanie, at his side.
Born on June 17, 1933, in Monticello, Mississippi, Dr. Paige dedicated his life to expanding opportunity through education. In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed him to serve as the 7th U.S. Secretary of Education, making him the first superintendent—and the first African American—to lead the Department. He served from 2001 to 2005, guiding the president in the development, passage, and implementation of the landmark No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
