Community relief effort brings basic needs and support to Rose Plaza Apartments residents
HOUSTON, TEXAS (August 29, 2026) — YES Prep Public Schools provided basic needs
YES Prep team members and volunteers distributed bottled water, food, hygiene products and other essential household supplies during a relief event at Brewster Park. Residents expressed tremendous gratitude for the assistance as families continued recovering from the disruption caused by the outage.
“As part of the Fifth Ward community, it was important for us to respond when our neighbors needed support,” said Isy Castillo, Chief External Officer at YES Prep Public Schools. “” YES Prep Cares is our promise that no family walks through a hard season alone.”
The effort also brought together community leaders and representatives from across Fifth Ward. Representatives from the office of U.S. Congressman Christian Menefee and Houston City Council Member Tarsha Jackson joined the event, along with the president of the Fifth Ward Super Neighborhood, Joette Stevenson, to support residents and the community response.
YES Prep has been part of the Fifth Ward community since 2011, operating a secondary school in the neighborhood and preparing to deepen its commitment with a new elementary school scheduled to open next school year.
Saturday’s distribution was organized through YES Prep Cares, a community engagement initiative that brings families, partners and team members together to connect Houston neighborhoods with resources and support. Through family-centered outreach and free resource events across Houston, YES Prep Cares helps connect families with services and supplies that support their health, stability and success.
“Seeing more than100 families come through today reinforces why efforts like YES Prep Cares matter,” Castillo said.” “The care and belonging our students feel inside our schools shouldn’t stop at the classroom door. Our families are part of our community, and we want them to know that when they need support, we’re here.”
