HOUSTON- When Talitha Coleman Lewis was growing up in Prairie View, everyone knew she was destined for success. First it was graduating high school and college, followed by her career as a teacher and then marriage to the smart and handsome Dr. Jimmie Lewis, Jr. M.D., then kids. Now, Talitha is celebrating another milestone in her life when she received her Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration from Texas Southern University.
Talitha’s achievement is a testament to and manifestation of her upbringing by lovely parents Redessa and Alvin Coleman and granddaughter of the late Bernice Fuller, who instilled in her values of reverence to God, love family and community service.
Upon graduation from Waller High in 1986, Talitha enrolled at Prairie View A&M University and received the Bachelors degree in Elementary Education in 1990. She began her teaching career in Houston Independent School District at Highland Heights Elementary, and completed stints as a Library Resource Specialist at Macgregor/Isaacs and Lockhart Elementary. She also served as counselor and testing coordinator at Anderson Elementary, a Library Resource specialist at Fonwood Elementary in North Forest and an independent sales representative with Gumdrop Books in Missouri.
Talitha holds a Masters in Counseling from Prairie View A&M University, Educational Diagnostician Certification from the University of Houston-Victoria and Library Resource Specialist and Alternative Certifications with Houston Independent School District. She also holds certification in counseling, Elementary Education –Pre-K-6 grade and Early Childhood Education.
When asked what this achievement means to her, she stated, “It’s been a long time coming but am grateful to my family for their understanding and support during these years of study, writing papers and taking exams.”
Talitha’s dissertation titled “The Effects of Teachers, Culture, Stereotypical Belief on Academic Achievement among African-American Males” will serve as the blueprint for her objective to becoming a dynamic administrator. She plans to create, monitor policies and best practices that promote a safe learning environment and positive school culture that encourages continuous improvements for students, teachers and parents. She also hopes to facilitate a learning centered environment that enhances open communication between colleagues, students and the community.
Lewis holds or has held membership in several professional, social and civic organizations including Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity, National Alliance of School Educators, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Boy Scouts of America (Assistant Scout Master), Jack and Jill of America, The Links, Inc., and The Great Debaters organization (Founder).
Talitha is married to Dr. Jimmie Lewis, Jr. (M.D.) and they have four sons: Jimmie, III, Joshua, Justin and Jordan.
