State Representative Sheila Jackson Lee Attacks Romney’s Proposed Budget Cuts

Would specifically harm African-Americans

As the Democratic National Convention gets underway, Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee is voicing her concerns about what Romney-Ryan Republican win would mean for African-Americans. In an interview with MSNBC, the Houston Democrat said that budget cuts proposed by the Republican ticket would specifically harm African-Americans, singling out proposed GOP cuts to Pell grants, Medicare, unemployment insurance and infrastructure.
After praising Democratic party as the “American all-inclusive party,” the congresswoman said Democratic voters “realize that equality and social opportunities are premiere to improving their economic opportunities.”
“The sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King [Jr.] is well embedded in African-American voters throughout the nation. We don’t want to go back to our social and civil rights being denied for promises about our economic rights,” she said. The Texas Democrat also praised the federal court’s decision to reject the Texas Voter ID law, saying that Republicans have “exaggerated the issue of fraud.”
