WALLER COUNTY- Rene Lara, Texas AFL-CIO’s Legislative and Political Director, addressed the Waller County Democratic Club’s monthly meeting. In his work, Mr. Lara advocates for working people—union and non-union alike—in the political and legislative arenas. He gave an overview of this year’s regular and special legislative sessions. Mr. Lara described his work, in partnership with other organizations, that helped protect state pension plans for government and municipal workers, such as teachers, firefighters and law enforcement officers.
This year, the AFL-CIO joined retirees around the nation to rally against proposed adjustments that would cut Social Security benefits for millions of retirees. Mr. Lara also explained how his legislative work also involved protecting the rights of those in Texas’ extensive building trades, such as plumbers and electricians. Mr. Lara’s lecture was enjoyable and educational for those in attendance. After Mr. Lara fielded questions, the group thanked him for coming all the way from Austin to speak.
