Doris B. McMillan, daughter of the late Boise Clay, was born July 8, 1928 in New York City. She departed this life on Friday, May 4, 2012 at her home in Whitesboro, New Jersey. Doris was educated in New York City, graduated from Psychiatric Institute of Nursing in Rockland County. She completed her graduate studies at Long Island University Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University.
“Nursie” as she was fondly called by many, became a Supervisor and Director of Nursing at Harborfields Juvenile Correction Facility and also did nursing at the Atlantic County Jail. She attended Glassboro State College and continued graduate courses to become a school nurse at the Cape May County Special Services School. Doris volunteered her time in organizations such as Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies, The Red Cross, The Advisory Commission on the Status of Women, AARP, AAUW, Liaison to female inmates in county jails, Glassboro Alumni and Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro – to name a few. Doris was preceded in death by her sister Cornelia Martin, stepbrother Raymond Marsh and God sister Gloria Easley. Doris is survived by her daughter, Sheila McMillan Tejada (Tony) of Whitesboro; sons, Herbert McMillan (Michelle) of Teaneck and Robert Muhammad (Natalie) of Texas; Goddaughter, Sandra Hamer-Jensen (Derek) of Cape May Court House; Godson, Michael Nicholson, Sr. of Virginia; and Grandchildren, Lance, Greg (Jessica), Keira, Solana, Robert Jr. (Saja), Mikal (Kellie), Ameer, Kamal, Kelli and Michael Jr.; and Great Grandchildren, Michele, LT, Majestic, Jonetta, Jaida, Jamai, Amia, Kayla, Keyon and Faith. Doris also leaves to mourn her very loving companion, John Alford (Pop) of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many devoted friends. Funeral services were held on May 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Household of Ruth Cemetery will be private.
