Introducing The North Harris County Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated

HOUSTON- Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to the underserved; to educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in communities. Today, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority has more than 250,000 members and nearly 1,000 chapters worldwide. The Sorority uses its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust of economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement to create its national programs.
On April 9, 2006, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated welcomed the 981st chapter into its Illustrious Sisterhood the North Harris County Alumnae Chapter, (NHCAC). The Ladies of North Harris County Alumnae Chapter are seated in Cypress, Texas and provide service for Cypress, Jersey Village, Humble, Spring, and Tomball. Affectionately known as the chapter on the move, NHCAC currently sponsors the following youth initiatives: Delta GEMS – Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully (adolescent girls ages 14-18), Delta Academy (11-14 year old girls), and EMBODI – Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence (adolescent males). The chapter has given more than $15,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors since 2006. With the presidential election quickly approaching in November, NHCAC is actively involved in making sure all persons in their service area are registered voters and make their way to the polls to vote.
The Delta Red Army will be in the community on September 22 and October 27 encouraging everyone to vote. On January 13, 2013 the sorority will celebrate its Centennial Founders Day in Washington DC. Locally, 4 of the Houston Area Chapters (North Harris County, Bay Area Houston, Houston Metropolitan & Suburban Houston Fort Bend Alumnae) will host a Joint Founders Day Observance on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Sugar Land Marriott. At this grand event local chapters will welcome the sorority’s Illustrious National President Cynthia M.A. Butler-McIntyre as the keynote speaker.
