HOUSTON – This year marks the 147th anniversary of the Damascus Missionary Baptist Church, 3122 Center Street, Houston, Texas. Founded in 1866, the church was organized to serve residents of Chaneyville which was located west of downtown Houston. This area was later renamed Sixth Ward.
Since 1903 the church has had only three pastors: Rev. David Hamilton Rankin (1903-1943), Rev. Jesse Daniel Taylor (1944-1962) and Dr. Lafayette Fernandez Chaney (1963-present). Damascus was honored with an official State of Texas Historical Marker in 1993.
Throughout its history, Damascus Missionary Baptist Church has spiritually served the community with missionary, worship, educational and civic outreach programs through the diverse group of people who have passed through its doors. With Christ as the head of its endeavors, Damascus will continue to strive forward. The Church Anniversary will be held Sunday, August 11th at 3p.m.
