HOUSTON- African-American News & Issues presents Leonard’s Famous Burgers as our Business Profile of the week. Mr. Leonard Banks, Sr., along with his wife, Murria began serving residents of the Acres Home community in 1962. In an era of segregation Mr. Banks pioneered a restaurant where members of the community could stop and get a delicious and inexpensive meal. Throughout the years, Mr. & Mrs. Banks became known for their ‘famous burgers’, resulting in the name of the 54-year-old establishment, Leonard’s Famous Burgers. Amongst Leonard’s Famous Burger’s delectable menu are items such as: cheeseburger, fries, fried fish, ribs and home-made smoked sausage links. Today, Leonard’s Famous Burgers still operates as a family-owned business. Since the passing of Mr. and Mrs. Banks, their daughter Janice Banks has continued as owner of the burger joint that Houstonians have come to love.
Mr. Chris J. a long-time patron of Leonard’s Famous Burgers stated that, “Leonard’s is a great little burger shack that makes places like this worth-while because they are way better than the major burger chains.”
Another frequent visitor, Mr. David T. of Friendswood, TX expressed his sentiments of satisfaction as he revealed the following. “Great juicy burger from a down-home hamburger shack. I’d read good things about Leonard’s. I was on the North side of town; the freeways were tangled from summer storms, and I dreaded the rush hour drive south. “I’ll go get a hamburger!” The sun came out when I pulled into Leonard’s little parking lot. For $3.75 I got one of those famous cheeseburgers. I waited while it cooked. Finally, he waved me over and gave me my food. “If you eat while it’s hot, you’ll find it delicious” and I did!”
Leonard’s Famous Burgers takes proud in servicing residents of the Houston and surrounding areas and looks forward to being in the community for many years to come. To taste one of Leonard’s famous burgers feel free to stop by 1913 West Little York Road, 77091.
