African-American News & Issues presents: Mrs. Shirley Ledet of Christian Outreach Center. She has been involved in training and life management consulting and mediations for over thirty years. Mrs. Ledet has facilitated policy and procedural changes for corporations as well as the State of Texas; man of which are still in use. She has worked with the Texas Legislature in a number of areas concerning policy and rule implementation. She provides conflict management consulting services to companies, organizations and school districts.
Dr. Ledet’s path has been eclectic to state the least. As an adolescent behavior specialist, she has worked with area school districts with specialties in anger management, parenting skills and other behavior driven issues. She has served as court appointed mediator in cases as well as individual mediator between survivor and perpetrator. She implemented a weekly reading program at M.C. Williams Middle School. Dr. Ledet has also been an adult education instructor (ABE/GED) for thirteen years also serving as lead instructor, coordinator, cohort leader and special population (16-18 years old) instructor. Her passions lead to her decision to transition from her position as one of corporate America’s top female executives to private practice to adult education to her current position as Executive Director of The Christian Outreach Center Houston. She continues to seek opportunities to engage in learning skills that will benefit those she serves by attending and participating in ongoing continuing education projects. Dr. Ledet holds a myriad of training certifications including mediation and family mediations from University of Houston Clear Lake and Conroe Mediation Center; effective parenting from The Center for Improvement of Child Caring; and anger management from the Anger Solutions Network, a BA in business management from Harvard University; graduate studies with Texas Tech, Portland University and Therapon University and holds PhD in Counseling. She has completed the Texas Credentialing Project and is now one of the 55 credentialed adult education instructors in Texas. She is one of the participants of Texas Impact Cohort (effective non-profit management). Future plans also includes studies in restorative justice and certification in non-profit management.
Dr. Ledet has served on numerous boards, committees and associations including but not limited to: Tx Association of Mediators, Texas Intiatives for Mediations in Education, Advocates for Incest Survivors, National Institute for Dispute Resolutions, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, School Board Member St. Rose of Lima School, Texas Association of Christian Counselors, Board Member Family Outreach of Houston, Spring ISD Advisory Board, Liberty Mutual Diversity Network, Texas Counseling Association., The Near Northwest Management Weed and Seed Steering Committee. Dr. Shirley Ledet has been married for 34 years with two children and two grandchildren.
Christian Outreach Center’s mission is to: maintain and operate a community benefit organization, develop and implement program and services that relieve the poor, reverse community deterioration, uplift its clients to self-sufficiency through education and social services, provide referrals when deemed appropriate and necessary, and providing every opportunity for clients to become self-sufficient. Christian Outreach Center Houston’s vision is to: permanently reduce the need for social services by 20% each year, provide services or resources that reduce recidivistic clients and continue to outreach in an effort to assist new clients in need.
Christian Outreach Center Houston has several programs that are offered to members of the community. These special programs include: Food Pantry, Mentoring Our Mothers (M.O.M), W.O.W (Women of the World), and a GED (High School Equivalency Program). The following programs are in process, new development or postponed for various reasons, but are tentative programs that COC will be implementing. They include: COC Open House, COC Board Retreat, ESL, Counseling Ministry, D-360 Mentoring Program, H.O.P.E Mentoring Program, Anti-theft Workshop, Re-entry Preparation Program, Battering Intervention and Prevention Program and Capital Improvement Plan.
