OAKLAND- Lanedria Grant, the aunt of Oscar Grant was fatally shot in East Oakland on Tuesday, according to an Oakland, California police report.
She has been identified as one apparently caught in cross fire that killed her and injured one other person while walking in the 600 block of Douglas Avenue in the city.
Grant was the sister of Oscar Grant Jr. and the aunt of Oscar Grant III, who was unarmed, shot and killed by Mehserle on the platform of the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland shortly after 2 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2009.
“It’s a tragedy,” said Attorney Waukeen McCoy, represents Oscar Grant Jr. in his civil rights lawsuit against former BART officer Johannes Mehserle. “The family’s been going through a lot lately. It’s been hard for him to concentrate now knowing that his sister has been killed.”
She was one of three sisters of Oscar Grant Jr. and was the mother of five children and the grandmother of nine.
Members of the Grant family recently came to Houston in support of Bellaire resident Robbie Tolan who was unarmed and shot by a police officer and also is dealing with a civil case involving police brutality.
The Grants have been traveling the United States telling Oscar Grant III’s story using the film “Fruitvale Station” and offering words of love and comfort to victims of such senseless violence.
