Every real mother that gives birth to a child only really wants one thing and that is the best for her child or children. Therefore, I just would like to make a tribute and ask readers of African-American News&Issues to uplift two of my children, who have really made me a proud mother. My firstborn son, Christopher Marks is 22-years-old; he made the decision to enlist in the United States Air Force on Sept. 11, 2012. Since his enlistment he and his unit have made extraordinary strides. His unit was given the title of Warrior Flight because of their outstanding performance during physical training, as well as other series of tests during boot camp. Chris has recently had his first amateur MMA Premier fight where he not only won the match, but he and his opponent were given an award for Fight of the Night! Secondly, there is my son Dexter Bowie who is 20-years-old. He enlisted in the United States Navy on Aug. 7, 2012. Within a little over a year, he has been selected as an Honor Recruit for Division 318; for his overall achievements during his training in boot camp. Additionally, Dexter is now stationed aboard the USS Harry S. Truman, where he has recently been promoted to an EM3 while on a nine-month deployment. Too often in the Black community, our young Black males are portrayed in a negative light. So while I am not boasting of myself, ultimately, all I can state is that I am extremely proud of the young men that these two have become. Although I do miss them dearly, I am honored to know that they are operating in a positive light.
